Beginning in 1989 and under the direction of Samaritan House volunteers provided clients from Daly City Community Service Center, Seton Hospital’s Mother and Infant Wellness Center, Sitike, Family Resource Centers (formerly F.U.T.U.R.E.S Project), Vista Grande Apartments, Visiting Nurses, and Ellipse with a three day supply of non perishable food. As the demand for food increased it was easy to recognize the need for the establishment of programs specifically for the north peninsula and in 1991 Daly City Emergency Food Pantry established itself as a 501(c)(3) organization.
Not only was the food pantry program essential to the community, the need for a hot meal program was recognized. Working again with Samaritan House and Hunger and Action Coalition of San Mateo County the North Peninsula Dining Center was opened in October 1992 and continues to provide a hot meal three nights each week – Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
With an annual budget of $100,000.00, community support continues to be the mainstay of the organization. The City of Daly City supports the space to operate the programs. The Town of Colma provided $12,500.00 last fiscal year. Support from these local governments reduces our fundraising requirement to approximately $90,000.00. Continued community support is essential to our success and is provided through support of fundraising activities, grants, and individual donations.
